COVID has made it difficult to figure out how family would meet our little Charlie. With friends, it was easier. We just wouldn't let friends close to or hold him. It wasn't the easiest pill to swallow, but the choice didn't keep us up at night since many are in health care and easily understand the added risks there. But family... family is tough. The idea of keeping family at a distance truly broke our hearts. After he was born, there were many tear filled days as I sat knowing that we would be the only ones that knew him on this day at this time. These are moments that families treasure, all the milestones.

We went into our birth with everyone, including us, not knowing when Charlie would meet family. Our families patiently waited for a sign from us on how this would go. We didn't know. We still don't know if we have the right answers. Are we being too risky? Are we being overly cautious?

What we ended up with: anyone who would hold our baby needed a mask and a two-week quarantine from the outside world. For everyone else, we just keep our distance. It's not our favorite plan, and are already talking about change, but it at least gets us started!

On Saturday, we met up with some of the Bulloss side and on Sunday, we met with the Deutsch side. We are so lucky to have family that respected our wishes and all the additional steps that were asked of them - I know it wasn't easy!

Some mess for your Monday:
  • The location on Saturday changed 3-4 times last minute and we ended up in a lovely field behind a gas station! It was honestly beautiful, with a back drop of Pilot mountain, but we will always remember the Bulloss parents meeting Charlie for the first time at a BP in North Carolina!!
  • Charlie has now peed on everything within a 4 ft radius of the changing table... Will always wanted a water feature so I don't know what we are complaining about.
  • Grandma Deutsch and Aunt Kim found that they could combine rocking Charlie with a workout considering he sleeps only when you use just about every muscle in your body to bounce, rock, bop! We will all have quads of steel before long.
  • "Colic" is an annoying label to me, and I don't know why, but it still stands that Charlie is not too far away from meeting the basic definition. It doesn't mean anything different for us really - we still do anything and everything to help him through whatever is causing the long crying spells, but we would welcome some extra love coming our way, especially between 5-10pm!
  • I attempted an online chemical engineering laboratory. My ChemE program is all online except for 3 laboratories that are done over the summer. Since COVID prevents in-person coursework, the labs were offered online for the first and only time, which is a major opportunity. WELP. I lasted a day and a half and realized NOPE, not happening. Charlie needs 100% of me right now and that is aok.
